John Eckstein joined the Utah Symphony at the age of 23 as one of the youngest members ever admitted to the symphony. After graduating from the Interlochen Arts Academy, Mr. Eckstein received his Bachelor of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music. He previously served as Associate Principal Cello of the New Orleans Symphony and Principal Cello of the Omaha Symphony. In 2004, he served as Principal Cellist with the Auckland Philharmonia in New Zealand. In addition to his orchestral duties there, he was featured soloist on several occasions. Mr. Eckstein enjoys a varied musical life of orchestral, chamber, and solo playing, in addition to his teaching duties at the University of Utah. He has previously taught several cellists who have gone on to have professional careers in music including members of his own Utah Symphony section.
